Could be physical damage from a drop, OR it could be that the battery has started to swell. Apple should be able to run a diagnostic on it and find out the problem. Depending on your warranty status it might be a covered repair (or you get lucky) if not they should be able to offer you options.

The iPad has never been dropped. I will see about visiting an Apple store. Thanks.
