What is this?

I have a 6s+ running 11.4.1. For the last couple/three days I’ve had this mysterious moving/spinning image/icon. What is it telling me? There are no open/currently active apps. What’s going on? More importantly, should I be concerned?

Thanks but I knew that since disabling my connection to my Wi-Fi causes it to disappear when I invoke airplane mode. I’m seeking to learn what the heck might the source/reason for this activity.

Is it constantly spinning, like nonstop? Normally it's network activity, but it should not be going nonstop for days. Mine does that on occasion and I have to reset my network setting just to make it quit. If I let it, it would continue for more than a week and munch the crap out of my battery. It's a bug in iOS that has followed me through 2 phones and since iOS 10.

I've seen more than a few people report it over on the Apple official forums, and had an Apple engineer call me about my post there.
