I have activated the icloud drive on my mac. I save some files there, but it seems they are downloaded.
The main reason that I use icloud is to save space in my mac.
how can i be sure these files are not downloaded?

If there is a cloud icon next to the file then it's not downloaded onto the device.

And once it’s downloaded, how can you make it undownloaded again?

"undownload" exactly, it would be the best to save space on the mac.
Some help on how to undownload?

One way is to delete the file and then go to the "Recently Deleted" option within the Files app. Press and hold on the file and then select "Recover". The cloud icon will appear next to that file like before.
