Why doesn’t my Series 1 Watch notify me of a message sometimes?

My Apple Series 1 Watch doesn’t vibrate or make a sound sometimes when I get a message, but then it will work a few times then won’t work again. Keeps doing this. Am I doing something wrong with it?
