How do you get a forgotten password when the email address attached to it is no longer in use?

Because the email is not active, you can’t even get past the first step to retrieving your password; hence, you cannot get to the reset part!

Yep, but that's a safety feature that's worth the risk, in my opinion. I don't want anyone stealing my iPhone and attempting to use it as if he or she paid for it. Always select a retrieval code as a backup in case phone numbers and Apple IDs are no longer in use. On top of that, invest in a password app like 1Password that automatically backs up to iCloud to store your valuable information.

It's not just for passwords, by the way.
