    I'm running High Sierra on my MacBook Pro, with a 1tb Seagate external HD. I've always had a ext, hd icon on my desk top. Yesterday it vanished, and i can't get it back. My back-ups are still showing in "finder", and it's making new back-ups, but i would like to get that desk top icon back. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

    Had this happen to me a few months ago with my Seagate External. Went to Finder>Preferences>General. Show these items on the desktop:External disk. Unchecked it and then checked it again. Restarted my iMac and it reappeared and has not been a problem since. Hope this helps you.
