ATV4K question

I was thinking of buying a new gen AppleTV (considering I still have a 3rd Gen from its original release day).

Everywhere I look, everyone is promoting the new AppleTV 4K, and that this is the model everyone needs.

My question is: Do I need a 4KTV to go with the ATV4K?

I have an HDTV (LCD if I'm not mistaken), and still works great after 8yrs. Is the ATV4K backwards compatible?

Yes, the Apple TV 4K does work on an HDTV, although, if I were you, I would go for the 4th generation TV, considering that it’s still sold by Apple. What’s the point of getting the ATV4K if you don’t have a 4K tv?
