Help saving contacts on iPhone to iCloud

I've just left an employer. Too many of my contacts were saved to the company Exchange server. Even though I have no access to the Exchange server, I can still see all my contacts on my iPhone (I have not yet deleted the Exchange account). I've turned on iCloud Contacts. How do I now make all the contacts on the iPhone sync to iCloud so they are available across all devices? I'm positive that when/if I delete the Exchange account, I will lose these valuable contacts.

If you’ve turned on iCloud Contacts on your iPhone, make sure you log in to iCloud on your other devices and turn Contacts on too. It should then sync throughout your devices

That's what I thought and what I did over 6 hours ago. Perhaps I need to be more patient?
