Is it a matter of luck? I hear people's screens shatter after around a 4ft drop but some people report the phone is perfect. Why does it shatter sometimes? Also, the more it drops does it weaken the glass, does scratches count as part of the weakening?

Whether iPhones, Android devices, Windows phones or whatever, they are all subject to being damaged and that is why it is up to the owner to step steps to protect the damage from occurring.

Depends on the surface it is hitting, the angle of the impact, the material it is impacting, if the phone has a case or screen protector, etc etc
