Continually trying to get husbands droid to "see or receive" my iPhone calendar requests

With the Android it's probably Google. You can set your default calendar to Google (you'll need a Google account/calendar yourself). Within my own Google calendar, I created a "Us" calendar, as well as one for each of the kids. These are all shared with my wife, and we keep the kids activities in their own part of the calendar (with colors) as well as our own stuff and shared stuff. Works great!
