In regard to the thread question, that'll depend on your email service. Anyway, with the exception of an exchange account, your email address and passcode is typically all you need to provide.

Download the Gmail app from the APP Store. That's all you need to do.
It's not necessary to use the GMail app in order to get GMail on the iPhone. It's an option but not necessary.

To the OP, not that your "outgoing mail server" doesn't have anything to do with "receiving" email.

If this is a regular GMail account, you should be able to set it up in the Settings app by just following the prompts and entering your email address and password. And following the prompts.

Title is somewhat confusing, but gmail does not push in default Mail App, and won't show up in mail client immediate (fetch), causing OP to wonder if it's working.
I use Outlook (of all brands :) and it is superb in iOS. Everything works just fine.
