Checked specs, machine capable of running Sierra. Need intermediate os x upgrade in order to upgrade to sierra or el capitan, but older upgrades not available on app store. Never purchased any of these upgrades, so can't get via "purchased" route. I could get a bootable usb for a clean install, but that would erase my HDD. (I have a Time Machoine backup incase things go sour). Anybody know how to get my hands on an upgrade installer?

Thanks, but what I need is not there. Can't upgrade directly to Sierra as OS X 10.7+ is required first. So I need 10.7 or 10.8...10.10 first. Upgrades to 10.10.1, for instance, are available, but they require 10.10 first, as they are upgrades to original versions. Ditto for all the others. Running 10.6.8 now.

How far did you go back in that list?

Went back to 2013. Looked at all the os x install downloads, and did not see any in the range of os x 10.7-10.10 that were not updates to the original install. They all required the base install as a system requirement.

I can purchase from Amazon bootable usb thumbdrives with newer os, but my understanding is to install that new os on the existing HDD, I have to erase everything on that drive first. Don't really want to do that, as all the other stuff there would be lost. I have a Time Machine backup of the existing machine in case everthing goes south. Main issue is all this is for a friend who is pretty computer illiterate, and don't need to confuse her with reinstalling and recovering a bunch of deleted stuff. She says she needs new OS to do what she wants to do; perhaps I should ask that those things are, and see if there is a work around for them. Other issue is I am really good at PC's but not so much on Macs myself.
If the machine is bootable from the usb stick, maybe she could use that as the start up location, but I have a feeling if it isn't integrated with the rest of her stuff, it really won't be a good solution.
