Does show caller id activate itself

my wife called me and the number came up as private. i asked her and she said that it did it on its own. Is it possible for the phone to block its ID without actually turning it off or on.

Welcome to iMore! If your carrier has that option in settings, maybe it was enabled by mistake. I have Verizon, and they don't offer that. Maybe someone else knows. You might contact your carrier.
