my old iPhone 4 won't let me do a backup because I recently changed my Apple ID and it's asking for old password to old Apple ID. Is there a way to get it to recognize the current account?

First log in with your old credentials to that iPhone. Log out and log in with your new credentials.

Also: Go to http://appleid.apple.com and try log in with your current credentials.
If no success, try the old credentials.

After that make sure you have it set like you wanted and try again on your iPhone.
