I have a macbook pro and need to back it up. can i use icloud to do that?
Depends what you want to back up.
Photos can be backed up with iCloud Photo Library and docs with iCloud Drive both of which are configured in Preferences > iCloud.
If you want to back up the configuration it'll need to be done with Time Machine and an external hard drive
