Stop iPad disconnecting from Hotspot?

Ive got a wifi only iPad Pro 9.7 which I use while at work.

I tether to my iPhone 7 Plus connection no problem, however this drops when the iPad is put to sleep for anymore than a couple of minutes.

Is there anything I can do to force the iPad to stay connected, until I manually disconnect the devices?

Some people have claimed that setting the Auto-Lock feature to "Never" in the Display & Brightness setting helps, but I've not confirmed it.
