Why would the new battery I installed not power up the phone? Suggestions for trouble shoot?

I followed the directions described and had the right tools. The phones previous battery would have to be charged off and on all day to last the day. So I replaced the battery and now the phone will not turn on at all. I have been charging it with a good cable.
