Why is my iphone 5s not connecting to ipod station?

I have connected my iPhone 5s to an ipod station in my portable stereo using a suitable adaptor. The display on the stereo is reading 'connection error' and 'not supported'. Can anyone help please - this is all new to me?! Thanks in advance!
