what do i do when the screen goes out

i work at a library and a customer came in with an I pad that he got for Christmas. he said it was working fine and then the picture went out. it keeps saying screen locked

If they set up a passcode, then they will need to enter that to get to the home screen. If the screen is just black and the device is charged there might be something wrong with it. If it is the ladder I would have them bring it to the Apple Store to check it out.
