Speed up a 2009 MacBook

I have a friend with an old 2009 MacBook. She can't replace it right now. She it gets light usage - email, youtube, web. Any recommendations to speed it up. I know putting in an SSD and RAM would help, but that would take money and risk. I think she is stuck on leopard or snow leopard and can't upgrade. She also likes OSX, and I don't think would go for a switch to a lighter linux like eOS.

Nothing you can do, really. Maybe a format and reinstall of the OS would help, but only temporarily. SSD is your best bet. Then RAM, but you may not notice much of a difference with just that.
