I got an Apple iWatch a while ago and it's still in the packaging. I really don't know how to use it, as in turning it on and off. My question is, do you need to sync it with the iPhone before you could use the watch?

Yes, you do need to sync it first — but it's a peace of cake, after initial pairing (with works with a really cool QR-code-like animation), it just takes a very very long time.
