How do I change my IPad 2 Messenger Photo?

My Messenger photo is the photo I want, but has all these graphics around the circle. I do not want graphics around it! I feel I have tried everything. Spent way too much time trying.

**ALSO, photo is not showing on my messages. Not even a circle showing......just a TOTALLY blank area where my circular photo should be seen.

I'm going to assume you're referring to your contact photo. If so, initiate the Contacts app, scroll to your specific contact information, select the photo therein to edit it, delete the photo and then replace it with the one you want.
