Why don't I get the option to upgrade to IOS 10 on my iPad when it tells me I have I software upgrade. The download option is not coming up.

Have you tried a hard reset, or even a shut down and restart.

    What model iPad?

You need to have an iPad Air or later (newer) in order to get iOS 10. Maximum iOS Version for iPod, iPhone & iPad @ Everyi.com

I thought the same thing but it would be weird for the update to show in the first place. We have two older iPads that my kids use and they never prompted for the iOS 10 update.

OP, check your model using the link that SwitchBeach provided and let us know if it's compatible and you still can't install iOS 10. You might try updating via iTunes.
