having problems with iMessage keep getting a blue bubble from other iPhone users, what does it mean i need to switch iMessage on?

Blue bubbles mean you're using iMessage and are messaging people with an iDevice. If you're getting a pop up to switch on iMessage, you can go to settings > messages & turn it on there.
