my iPhone is locked after update

my wife updated her iPhone 6, when she tried to set it up her passcode won't work and her phone is locked

She most likely forgot her passcode as it shouldn't change after updating. I'd recommend a restore via iTunes to remove the passcode. It will also remove any other data that you have on the phone, so make sure its backed up.

To solve the phone locked issue try these steps:

2. Sign in to iCloud.com from a computer. To reset your account password go to your Apple ID account page and click Forgot Apple ID or password. And then follow the steps to add new password or id.
3. Open Settings and scroll to the My Devices section.
4. Confirm that your device is listed in the My Devices section. If you don’t see it listed, check all your accounts.

Note that these instructions are regarding the Apple ID password. This will not work for someone who has forgotten the device passcode.
