Why won't itunes play the tv show episodes, or music videos I've purchased?

The tv show episodes and music videos I purchased on itunes are not playing. Itunes tells me they are available to watch, but I just get a black screen. Clicking on the play/pause button does nothing. For music videos it tells me to click on library then choose 'play music video', but this option does not appear.
