Welcome to iMore! It could be a number of things. What model of iPad do you have? Are you always using the same app when this happens or is it happening regardless of what app you're using? Are you able to power it back on right away? These issues are often be battery related on older devices. Apple's iPad batteries are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity for 1,000 full charge cycles but you're on borrowed time after that.

You might want to run an iTunes restore and set it up as a new device to weed out a software issue. Slowly add apps back in and see how your iPad does. If you're still experiencing an issue take it into an Apple Store or contact Apple Support.
