Why would a working FaceTime contacts FaceTime icon become brayed out and no longer work

I make FaceTime calls to my grandson on his iPad. Suddenly on his contact page The FaceTime icon is grayed out and I can no longer call him. Cannot figure out what changed or what the problem is. Please advise

iPad turned off maybe? Or something happened when he updated it to the new iOS 10? Have him try restarting the iPad, hold the home and power buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the apple logo appears. You do the same on your iPhone. See if this fixes the problem.

Have your grandson sign out and back in to FaceTime on his iPad.
In the meantime restart your own device.

A greyed out FaceTime icon means that your grandson appears to be not logged in to FaceTime according to your iPad.
