I can't get past the Activation Lock after my update

My son just did the update and he thinks he remembers what he used for the Apple ID. It gives the first part of the email used for Apple ID. We tried the password he would have used and it says that that Apple ID cannot be used to unlock this phone. Does anyone have a suggestion. We have tried everything.

It's has to be the original Apple ID that was on the iPhone. If he does. It remember he can go to iCloud.com to reset it.

I am trying to sell my iPhone 6S plus and have had three times my phone get associated with an incorrect iCloud account. Twice I have had the Apple support reset it after submitting proof of purchase. Has happened a third time so I I will go to store next.
