Photo album iTunes help

Ok this might sound retarded but this is my first apple product and it's an iPad Air ,so I'm still learning how to use this device and using iTunes .Now what frustrates me is iTunes is being a pissy whenever I want to add new photos on to my iPad using sync photos option ,it deletes my previous album and I lost 3 years worth of memory because of this issue.Is there something wrong I'm doing using iTunes?
