How do I get my I phone 5 connected to my smart tv so it will project what is on my phone screen to the tv screen do I need a converter for hdmi cable or something

I actually prefer the AppleTV way! Not only can you project your iPad, or iPhone, BUT also your Mac. Plus the AppleTV is pretty cool in it's own right.
