Can a mini iPad be kept in a case

Had iPad in a case when I was reading my book and it got very hot. Why

Could be any number of things but are you charging your iPad? It could also be a background app running rogue. Reboot your device & see if that helps.....press & hold the power button & home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.
