The Role of Secure Texting in Patient Communication?

I

iMore Question

Healthcare providers of every scale and specialization are all faced with the same challenge of providing patients with the direct communication they now demand while at the same time remaining HIPAA and HITECH compliant. Additionally, several states have implemented their own security requirements for the protection of private medical information and notification of any and all security breaches. From patient privacy to medical necessity, the state of secure healthcare communication is ever-changing and will continue to impact all areas of the medical community throughout 2016 and beyond.

It's also a requirement for the healthcare provider to send communication through secured approved software build specifically for that particular medical facility. I'm a nurse that works in Informatics and the newest software includes Core Measures & Meaningful Use for communication. To meet those guidelines and be compliant with CMS, JCAHO & not violate HIPAA or HITECH, medical professionals must communicate through said approved software. That approved secure software must be accessed by the clinician with a secure user ID/password and also on the patient end by a user ID/password. We are not allowed to send communication through text or email or even leave information on voicemail.
