    My Mac is telling me that my next update is to go to El Capitan 10.11. but when I try to download it from the app store, it denies me saying I need to have a core 2 duo processor. I have an external hard drive if that helps.

    Here is a link from iMore on how to make a bootable drive of El Capitan and some further instructions on haw to install El Capitan.

    Hopefully this will help you to download and install it.
