Why won't my phone pick up the local carrier outside uk?

I'm getting a 'no service' top left even though travelling companions are picking up the local carrier. My phone is set to automatic on carrier. I've removed and replaced SIM card and switched on and off.

When you mention "local carrier", are you referring to the wireless carrier that your phone is associated with? By the way, what phone are you using?
