How can I get the phone and messages to ring

The phone doesn't ring when someone is calling. It just vibrates. Same when a message comes throuhh.I've switch everything off to allow the phone to ring but it doesn't. There is nothing wrong with the speaker as I can play music and watch you tube. I can hear people when using the phone and vice versa

this may sound like a dumb question but did you flick the mute switch forward on the left side of the phone? so that you do not see the orange?
