    Hi
I just purchased an iMac 4k Retina that shipped with El Capitan. I need to downgrade to Yosemite to keep the computer compatible with 3rd party software.

    kind regards
    Bernard

Welcome to iMore. I am pretty sure this can not be done. You iMac comes with a specific OS X for a reason. That reason being, so it will run properly. Here is a link from Apple as to why you should not attempt to run an older version of an OS X than the one that came with you iMac. That being said, you could make a boot disk of Yosemite with DiskMaker X on a USB or external drive and try it first to see how your iMac will run.
