Why is my iPhone 6 frozen on "verifying update"?

It won't allow me to turn the phone off, nor allow me to answer calls. Has been in this state for 2 hours now

Check your internet connection. Understand that Apple could be experiencing problems with its servers. You can also, restart the process.
