    The red line appeared after my husband, who is not familiar with an iPhone, tried to use the camera.

    I am not sure I've ever seen a red line running down the screen that didn't indicate some sort of problem. I would try rebooting the phone by holding the Home and Power buttons for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. If that doesn't help, perhaps a trip to the Apple store will be in order as it sounds like something else may be wrong.
