IPad 2 upgrade from a version lesser than 7. something to the current 9. something

Hello and Good day. I recently got passed down an IPad 2 from my dad and the firmware version is not even a 7...I have tried countless times to upgrade it to the current version but i keep getting errors...either (9) or (11). Please please please can anybody help me out??
I have updated my iTunes to the current version and I'm using an original apple cable. I'm doing the update via a windows 8.1 pc. Thank you.
