My messaging is always in edit mode. In fact the word messages across the top of the screen is now in real fine small black print and every time I wanna text I have to write a message and then cancel that to go back to the person I was originally going to text. It's weird. I don't know how it got this way.

Welcome to iMore! That's strange. Try performing a soft reset. To perform a soft reset, hold both the power button and home button down until you see the Apple boot logo. If that doesn't work the only thing I can recommend doing is restoring your device and seeing if that fixes the issue. I recommend restoring via iTunes and setting your phone up as a new device. While it's time consuming it also provides the cleanest installation.
