Connect to iTunes on computer, and check for update... that will deliver you the last available iOS compatible with your device.

Yes, get a newer model iPhone, preferably the iPhone 5S or above.

According to the IPSW Database, 7.1.2 is the newest firmware your phone can run. D is right- if you want the newer OS, you need new hardware.
