Why does my iPad only show up in vertical rather than horizontall

It could be that you have it locked on Portrait. What you should do is:

-Swipe up from the bottom of your iPad to show the bottom taskbar. Click the icon to the right (the lock with the all around arrow). If it is locked, the icons circle will be white. If It's not, it will be transparent. This icon is called Orientation Lock.
