Why can't I hear people when I am using Skype on my iPad Air 2 - although they can see and hear me?

I don't know. Did you attempt to increase the volume? Is something covering the speaker?

Check to see if the volume is all the way up. Make sure your headphones, if you are using them are plugged all the way in. Make sure that your device isn't in vibrate mode.
