The issue happened with both an iPhone 5 & 6. The 5 was a couple of years old and I assumed it was just worn out. Now the 6 has the same symptoms. No send or receive text and no placing or receiving calls. It is also warm as if it is trying to do something. Searching settings and multiple on/offs and hard resets have not helped. In settings iMessage is off and it will not let me change it. On my iTunes account I went to my cloud backup and used it instead of allowing a backup from my desktop. This is actually 3 phones in 6 weeks with the same issue.

Before applying a backup, see what happens when you restore as new. Do you see the same behavior or does it work as desired?

If it has been 3 phones within a 6-week period then something is indeed wrong and has nothing to do with the phones. Unless you have an electricity issue, do as stated above by natasftw and restore your device, but instead of restoring a backup, set it up as new. It's possible that your backup has been corrupted and is causing the problems. Is the device jailbroken?
