    To get Message notifications, what side switch do I have to use and in what position?

    The switch at the top should be on. To the right I think. When you turn it on you will see a bell on your screen. If it's off, you'll see the bell crossed out.
    Then go to Settings >Sounds > Text alert > set a sound alert for text.
    Then go to Settings >Notifications > Messages>set as desired. I have mine set to "banner". Everything else on.

    What device?

    If you are asking about iPhone, then
    Settings > Notifications > Message > then set the notifications as you wish.

    Be sure "Allow Notifications" is selected. (Green)
