Why does itunes not resume the playlist where it left off?

I use my iPad to play my music in my car. It is running in the background sometimes if I am using Waze for driving directions. However, even when I am not using Waze, when I plug the iPad back into my car (iTunes is still open in the background), my music does not resume the song it was playing. It will start at the very first song alphabetically of my music. I have been trying to listen to my "Recently Added" playlist for months now, but have never got through it due to this annoying error.

That's crazy!! Mine always starts where it left off. As soon as my phone connects in the car, it starts playing whatever was playing when I got out.
