Why wont my IPOD version 8.4 apps update?

It says 78 updates are pending, I have it set to update in the background. When I click on "update" do do it manually, I get a circle with a square in it, but nothing happens.
My wifi is working fine and I am downloading email on the ipod so I figure that its not a connection problem on my end.???

It's probably not able to handle the load of the apps that need to be updated. I'd suggest doing them one by one after a hard reset.
