Why don't alerts and notification sounds work?

test messages, mail, and calendar alerts don't make a sound and banners don't appear when phone is locked

Make sure Do Not Disturb is disabled.

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and make sure the moon icon is off. Also when you are on DnD there is a moon icon in the top status bar.
