Are you able to use instagram (direct) in place of iMessage?

iMore Question

We will be traveling to Europe and the texting plans are a lot. My daughter texts (iMessage) a lot with her boyfriend but the charge per message is prohibitive. I am wondering if she can use the Instagram platform instead for the same purpose.

iMessaging is not the same as texting. It uses data, different from SMS (texting). As long as she has Wifi or some sort of data connection, which you'd also need for Instagram, she can use iMessage.

Just stay on wifi. You can also use Facetime. Only wifi though. If your mail uses push, you may want to disable that. Cellular is not cheap there.

Instagram isn't a messaging app but it requires data/wifi as well as iMessage. Other messaging apps need data or wifi as well.

Why don't you just buy a phone card for her to call him ? I'm sure she can express more over voice than text and it WILL cost you less money especially in Europe.
